Auctioneer Chosen for Frank’s Nursery in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – An auctioneer has been selected by the town of Greenburgh to auction off the property that used to be the location of Frank’s Nursery.

There are seven acres of land available at 715 Dobbs Ferry Road. The firm selected is GA Keen Realty Advisors.

The company was chosen after several interviews with other realtors and auctioneers, said Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

GA Keen will receive up to five percent of the gross proceeds from the sale if the contract is approved by the town. According to town officials, zoning for that area will allow the property to be used for residential homes or assisted living facilities.

Harold Bordwin, managing director of GA Keen, will attend the Town Board meeting on Wednesday, June 18,  for a discussion about the agreement. Feiner said he expects the deal to be voted on later in June. The property auction will probably be in the fall, he added, with bidding likely to start at $3.5 million.

The town had previously considered selling the property to two different buyers, each of which had hoped to build a sports facility on the land. There has been some controversy about the decision to auction it off instead, along with lawsuit threats.

The land became town property in 2011 due to tax foreclosure. Game On 365 had offered $1.7 million down and $1.3 million over the next 13 years, and town officials announced acceptance of the deal in May 2013. That agreement was later rescinded and the property was offered to House of Sports.

House of Sports had previously offered to pay $3.5 million in cash to buy the property in its current condition. Game On and House of Sports then both threatened to sue the town if the property was sold to the other. This has led to the decision to auction it off instead.

“It’s the cleanest way that the town can avoid a lawsuit,” Martin Hewitt, project manager for Game On, said.
