WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Janet Hasson, whose resignation as president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group effective March 6 was announced earlier this week, will become The Providence Journal's president and publisher.

Hasson's appointment to the Providence post was announced on Friday by The Providence Journal and its owner, GateHouse Media, which purchased the publication last year.

She will become just the second female publisher in the 185-year history of Rhode Island’s largest newspaper, and first since 1879.

Hasson, 55, of Greenwich, Conn., joined the Journal News in 2011 and helped the company launch its new digital and print products, LoHud.com said.
