New Swim School Opens In Elmsford

ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- A new swim school is hoping to have everyone enjoy the water- whether you're the next Michael Phelps or dipping your toes for the first time.

SwimLabs Westchester recently opened at 3 Westchester Plaza in Elmsford. The swimming training center offers high definition cameras, a 70-inch flat panel TV and a wireless mouse with a keyboard so swimmers can watch themselves and track their progress.

"You can record a swimmer's stroke or slow it down," Rodney Weinstein, who owns SwimLabs with his wife, Diane, said. "You can compare their swimming through time and help a championship swimmer perfect their stroke."

Weinstein, a White Plains resident, said there is no other swimming facility like this in the Northeast, with the nearest facility in Virginia.

"Kids love it," Weinstein said. "They really enjoy being able to take advantage of the technology. They can splash around and blow bubbles and see themselves on camera."

The pools are kept at 92 degrees, which kids enjoy, Weinstein said and many parents opt for private lessons. While world-class swimmers come to SwimLabs with dreams of an Olympic medal, the facility also gets kids just learning how to swim. SwimLabs also has classes for adults and an entire program for kids with special needs.

Weinstein and his wife are avid summers. They are the parents of five children, who also swim, with the two oldest swimming competitively. He realized by opening a facility in the area, he would be filling a void.

"How does Westchester and the New York Metro Area not have something like this?" Weinstein said. "It's a very common frustration among swimmers. When you have kids swimming laps for two hours, they're typically not giving them over the shoulder technique analysis."

Learning how to swim is a very important life skill for both parents and kids, Weinstein said.

"It can be terrifying to have your child around water, whether it be leaving them alone in a bathtub for 30 seconds or going to a beach," Weinstein said. "This is a life skill that everybody needs. It's like riding a bike."
