“We know that there are a lot of talented people out there, including kids of all ages, who are taking fabulous photos with their phones,” said Amy Allen, executive director of the Darien Arts Center.
The contest will be sponsored by Darien Rowayton Bank and Geary Gallery. It is open to all, but photos must be taken with a smartphone and submitted online at darienarts.org between March 14 and April 4.
Enter either as a student age 15 and under or as an adult age 16 and over in one of seven themed prize categories including, My Darien, Family and Friends, Landscapes/Nature, Travel, Pets, Abstract, Selfie.
Professional photographer Alix Martinez, formerly of Darien, will be the show judge. First place and Honorable Mention cash prizes will be awarded to adults and children in all categories. Contestants must live or work in Darien or if not, must pay an additional registration fee.
PicDarien also allows the DAC to showcase local talent in the visual arts at their upcoming Darien’s Got Talent competition, which features the performing arts. A slideshow of PicDarien photo entries will run during intermission of the popular talent competition, taking place on June 25 at Darien High School.
“I’m thrilled to have the visual arts get a little ‘face time,' pun intended, at this popular town event. Creative expression of all kinds is such an essential part of a thriving community - I’m anticipating seeing compelling images by community members of all ages,” said Beth Cherico, Visual Arts director at the Darien Arts Center.
There will also be an award and reveal reception open to the public, with refreshments and a slide show of all photo contest entries, at the DAC Weatherstone Studio on Friday, April 8.
