More Fiber and Less Fat Increase Weight Loss

Do you have any interest in tripling your weight loss? (I knew that would get your attention.)

WebMD reports that eating more fiber — and, importantly, less fat — can triple weight loss, according to a study conducted in Finland. Researchers analyzed diets of 500 middle-age obese men and women. They found that those who consumed more fiber and less fat lost three times the weight over a three-year period than those who consumed high-fat, low-fiber diets. Additionally, this group was found to be approximately 62 percent less likely to develop diabetes.

Because it literally bulks up in the stomach, fiber helps you feel more filled with food for longer periods of time. And as it travels through the digestive system, fiber carries away some fat. Certain kinds of fiber, such as the kind found in bananas, increases fat metabolism by blocking the conversion of some carbohydrates into glucose (sugar). Also, the overall nutrient density of fruit and vegetables helps curtail deficiency-fueled overeating.
