Elmsford Theatre Debuts 'Fiddler On The Roof'

ELMSFORD, N.Y. — For the next month, the Westchester Broadway Theatre of Elmsford will be all about tradition.

"Fiddler on the Roof" debuted on Thursday at Westchester Broadway Theatre, 1 Broadway Plaza, Elmsford, and will do showings until Nov. 25. The classic musical offers a cast of professional local actors and actresses, and, of course, tradition.

"It's a real tapestry of characters and emotions. I've always wanted the chance to do my take on Tevye," said Bill Nolte of Manhattan, who plays the character of Tevye.

The play was put together in just 11 days, with non-stop rehearsals and lots of traveling for actors like Nolte who live in the city. For Westchester County residents acting in the show like Samantha Robins and Gianna Florio, both 12, the commute was much easier — but catching up on homework wasn't.

"I like performing with all adults because we have someone to look up to," said Gianna, a Pleasantville Middle School student who plays Bielke, one of Tevye's daughters. "I love to act, I love being on stage. But you have to stay caught up with your schoolwork."

Westchester Broadway Theatre is unique in that it not only offers a show — dinner, drinks and comfortable seating are also provided for audience members.

"Fiddler on the Roof" has been held at the theater several times, said Michael J. Farina of Tarrytown, who plays Mordcha the Innkeeper. Farina said he's acted in several "Fiddlers" throughout his career, but what drew him to this show was its director, Richard Stafford.

Often, "Fiddler" can be "overdone and ‘caricaturely,’" but Stafford's directing and the cast is what makes this showing a masterpiece, said Terry Palasz, who plays Yenta the Matchmaker.

"It's well-acted, it's honest, it's interesting and respectful," said Palasz of Manhattan. "You feel like you're really part of the show."

Tickets for "Fiddler on the Roof" can be purchased online or by calling the Westchester Broadway Theatre's box office at (914) 592-2222.
