4 Red Goes Airborne for Another Win

NEW CANAAN, Conn. ? The New Canaan Red 4th grade team unleashed its passing game for two TDs and a 27-16 win over a Westport team. NC Red now stands unbeaten through seven games.

New Canaan won the toss and elected to receive. After three good runs by Nick Gilio and Robert Evans, quarterback Andrew Smith connected with Ryan McAleer on a 55-yard touchdown pass. The right side of the Red offensive line — Thomas Marshall, Charlie Mullaney, Alec Kazlauskas and Steven Hoge — provided great protection.

After three plays and a punt, New Canaan took over once again, running a nine-play sequence that culminated in a 30-yard touchdown run by Ryan McAleer. The extra point was successful on a pass from Smith to Thomas Marshall. That brought the score to 13-0.

After a sustained drive of nine plays, Westport was forced to turn over the ball. Red took over on its own 45. After three plays, Smith connected with McAleer for his second touchdown pass, this one for 35-yards. The half ended with New Canaan leading 20-0.

After two short drives, NC Red gave the ball back to Westport, which launched a 10-play series that resulted in a touchdown and two-point conversion.

The NC Red offense returned with its own seven-play drive, culminating in a 34-yard touchdown run by Robert Evans. It was Evan's 13th TD of the season. A successful extra point run was made by Nick Gilio.

Once again, the NC Red offensive line came through with protection and opened up running lanes. The anchors of the line were Thomas Marshall, Charlie Mullaney, Alec Kazlauskas, Steven Hoge, Andrew Morse, Greg Korsun and Jack Anderson. Backs McAleer, Gilio, Smith and Evans also delivered crushing blocks.

The New Canaan defense also turned in a stellar performance, allowing only two scores. Marshall and Mullaney executed a key sack of the QB on a crucial fourth and short. Tyler Saitta, Nick Hoge, Colby Gardiner, McAleer, Smith and Evans made key defensive plays throughout the game. Late stops by AJ Eason, Dylan McDonald, Xander Arnone and Riana Afshar prevented another score by Westport.
