Police: Bridgeport Gum Bandit Caught In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Bridgeport man was charged with larceny Friday after he stole $83 worth of chewing gum from the Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue in Fairfield, police said.

Charles Butler, 44, of Cityview Avenue, was seen leaving the store without paying for several packages of Orbit gum, police said. Approached in the parking lot by a loss prevention employee, Butler fled the scene, stopping to pick up packages of gum that fell out of his pockets as he crossed Tunxis Hill Road, police said.

A police officer found Butler hiding on Tunxis Hill Road with several packages of gum in his jacket and pants pockets, police said.

He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 21.
