HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- Westchester parents made the most out of their children’s costumes and celebrated Halloween early at Spooktoberfest, held at Hart’s Brook Park and Preserve in Hartsdale on Saturday

“They’ve been dying to wear their costumes, so what better place to than here,” said Angel Edwards, who was with her sons Brandon and Alexander and husband Gregory.

The Edwards’ boys, also known as Spiderman and Iron Man, were among hundreds of costumed children enjoying a sunny afternoon of festive activities at the tenth annual event held by the Greenburgh Department of Parks and Recreation.

“Most places have Halloween events, but we wanted to make sure we could showcase this park once a year, particularly during the fall because of the beauty,” Greenburgh Parks and Recreation Deputy Commissioner Joseph Lucasey told Daily Voice.

Hart’s Brook Park and Preserve, which is half owned by the State, and a quarter each by the County and Town, has 2.5 miles of trails and is 120 acres. It is managed by the Town of Greenburgh and opened to all.

“So many people don’t even know this part is here,” said Lucasey. “Once we do this event every year, people then follow up and come back with their families to experience the passive nature of this park.”

Lucasey said Spooktoberfest grows annually, and expects between 1,000 and 2,000 people to attend this year. This year, kids danced to DJ Peter, laughed at Confetti Clowns, were amazing by a juggler and watched a performance of Pirate School.

There was also inflatable slides, crafts, a hay ride and face painting. The Parks and Recreation Department decided to add a band this year, and invited Dobbs Ferry’s Greetings From Anywhere to perform.

“It’s nice to be able to use local vendors,” said Lucasey.

Among the local vendors were eateries from Dobbs Ferry, including The Cookery's DoughNation truck, which sells pizza and donates two percent of each pie to charity, and Dobbs Dawg House.

“It’s Halloween and was something for them to do,” said Edwards. “This is the second time, and now they’re old enough to really enjoy it. We love the6 shows. We loved Magic Mario, he was funny! This is great.”
