Greenburgh Nature Center Hosts Presentation For Students To Present Data

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Greenburgh Nature Center recently hosted an evening presentation by local middle school students who participated in the Bronx River Study.

The presentation demonstrated the value of working with young students to promote environmental stewardship of the river and the surrounding ecosystem.

As part of the Edgemont seventh-grade science curriculum, the students study the biological and chemical health of Woodfrog Pond at the Nature Center. The seventh-grade research group river study program is an enrichment activity to explore the content at a higher level.

The program consisted of working with a group of Edgemont seventh-graders to conduct a physical survey and habitat assessment at two locations along the river, one by the Scarsdale train station and the other by the County Center in White Plains.

The students collected and analyzed scientific data related to substrate type, water quality, flow patterns and plant and macro invertebrate life. “It is a joy for me to work with these eager and enthusiastic young scientists," said Maria DeCandia, founder of the program and a teacher at Edgemont Middle School.

Together, they have collected data about the health of the Bronx River that spans 15 years and is the largest continuous database of the river.
