“Mexican culture, and that of the New York Mexican community, is quite varied and finds expression in many forms and on many occasions. The State of Puebla in Southeast Central Mexico is a region of great artistic and cultural diversity,” said Tom van Buren, director of ArtsWestchester's Folk Arts and Performance Program. “Throughout the tumultuous history of colonial Mexico, folk dances remain among the most important and resilient forms of expression.”
The Festival Poblano, highlighting a vibrant regional culture of Mexico through the visual and performing arts, will include performances by Mariachi Sol Mixteco (White Plains); MAZarte Dance Company (Bronx); Telpochcalli youth dance group (Yonkers); Carnaval de Huejotzingo, a masked dance group; Danza de los Tecuanes, performing native dance traditions; and Banda Que Buena, brass band.
Workshops include participatory dance with MAZarte choreographer Martha Zarate and a craft workshop led by folk artist Aurelia Fernandez.
