HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery will honor the nation's canine warriors when it hosts its 25th Annual War Dogs Memorial, Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m.

The Journal News columnist Phil Reisman will be the keynote speaker and volunteers from the Shelter Pet Alliance will conduct a Pet Adoption from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

"Phil Reisman has a soft spot in his heart for pets and the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, which will be the focus of his address," Hartsdale Pet Cemetery spokesperson Bruce Fabricant said. "A special wreath laying ceremony at the foot of the War Dog Memorial will follow.

Hartsdale's War Dog Memorial is designated a landmark by the Westchester County, New York's Office of Tourism and is listed in the Art Inventories Catalog of the Smithsonian. Hartsdale is the only pet cemetery listed on U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The memorial, a bronze German shepherd on a large granite rock, was built at the cemetery in 1923 as the first memorial to pay tribute to the 7,000 dogs that served in World War I.

"This month the cemetery restored the promenade leading to the War Dog Memorial," Fabricant said.

The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is located at 75 North Central Park Avenue in Hartsdale.
