Covid-19: CT Positivity Rate Stays Above 3 Percent; New Breakdown By County, Community

The Department of Health reported 13,755 new COVID-19 tests that were administered on Thursday, Aug. 19, resulting in 431 newly confirmed cases for a 3.13 percent positive infection rate.

The previous day, the infection rate was at 3.37 percent after spiking to 4.25 percent earlier in the week.

Two new COVID-19 patients are now being treated in Connecticut hospitals, bringing the total to 346 across the state.

A week ago, approximately 160 COVID-19 patients were being treated for the virus.

The Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to be the dominant strain in Connecticut, now accounting for more than 80 percent of all new infections, officials noted. In the past week, the number of cases of the Delta variant is also up hundreds over the past several weeks.

Since the pandemic began, more than 10.25 million COVID-19 tests have been administered, resulting in a total of 365,856 laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus in Connecticut residents.

Connecticut continues to be among the country's leaders in administering the COVID-19 vaccine, ranking second nationally with more than 74 percent of the eligible population 12 years and old receiving at least one dose.

A breakdown of which populations have received the most vaccines, by age group, according to the latest data from the state:

  • 65+: 97 percent;
  • 55-64: 87 percent;
  • 45-54: 78 percent;
  • 35-44: 76 percent;
  • 25-34: 67 percent;
  • 18-24: 64 percent;
  • 16-17: 73 percent;
  • 12-15: 60 percent.

The latest breakdown of confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases in Connecticut, by county, according to the state Department of Health on, Friday, Aug. 20:

  • Fairfield: 104,359 (11,063 per 100,000 residents);
  • New Haven: 96,671 (11,310);
  • Hartford: 88,969 (9,977);
  • New London: 23,907 (9,015);
  • Litchfield: 15,288 (8,478);
  • Middlesex: 13,534 (8,332);
  • Windham: 11,348 (9,717);
  • Tolland: 10,121 (6,715).
