Townsend, Combs Lift Iona Prep Past Chaminade

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Justin Combs replaced injured quarterback Mario Biaggi, scoring twice and throwing a touchdown pass, and running back Shaquille Townsend rushed for 235 yards and caught a scoring pass to lead Iona Prep to a 24-20 comeback victory over Chaminade Sunday in a CHSFL Class AAA quarterfinal game.

Iona Prep (7-3), the No. 4 seed, advanced to next week’s semifinal game against the top-seeded and unbeaten St. Anthony’s team that pulled out a 28-27 victory over the Gaels in last week’s regular-season finale. Chaminade was seeded No. 5.

Combs, who replaced the injured Biaggi in the first half, rushed for 62 yards and completed 3 of 3 passes for 49 yards. He ran one in from the 3-yard line for the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Townsend helped the Gaels control the ball for most of the game on the ground and also caught two passes. Combs’ 15-yard pass to Townsend and a 25-yard field goal by Alex Kapp gave the Gaels a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Chaminade scored on an 83-yard scoring pass from quarterback Joe Anile to Thomas Zenker to take a 14-10 lead in the third quarter, but Combs answered with two scores from 3 and 4 yards to give Iona a 24-14 lead. Chaminade made it close with another scoring pass from Anile to Zenker late in the fourth to draw within 24-20.

Gaels defensive back Daniel Fischer had an interception to stop a potential Chaminade scoring drive late in the game.
