Downtown Chappaqua Construction Plans Ready for Approval

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Preliminary plans for the overhaul of Greeley Avenue's water mains have been submitted to the New Castle Town Board and are ready for approval, town officials said.

The plans come nearly two months after the town decided to give local merchants a reprieve from construction work and instead shifted 2012's focus to strictly design and engineering plans.

"This will give us all the infrastructure information we need to go out to bid to do the work," said Town Administrator Penny Paderewski.

Work on the plans was carried out by two outside firms. Dolph Rotfeld Engineering focused on the underground infrastructure and Munz Associates drew up plans for the above-ground beautification work. The town budgeted a total of $151,022 for the plans.

According to the plans, the initial water main construction will be carried out from New Castle Town Hall on South Greeley Avenue to the Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps at the end of North Greeley Avenue.

The plans will be put to a vote at an April 10 town board meeting. If approved, town officials plan to open bidding for the construction in the winter of 2013, with the actual construction work beginning later that year in the spring.

Engineering and design work for the upgrade of water mains and sewer lines underneath King Street was also included in the plans. That construction is scheduled to be carried out in 2014.

"It will be the whole enchilada so we’ll see what it looks like," said Paderewski.

The preliminary design plans can be altered once they are approved and eight meetings have been scheduled between Munz Associates and town officials to discuss improvements they would like to see in the downtown area. Council member Elise Kessler Mottel said the discussions will focus on lighting, signing and sidewalks.

"I think we’ve heard from the merchants, I think we’ve heard from people in town that those are absolutely things that we need to address," Mottel said.
