Biondi School Stripped of Class D Championship

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Section 1 officials have stripped the Biondi School of their Class D Championship, according to a report in The Journal News. The Lions are led by former Pleasantville High School coach Bob Delle Bovi.

The article cites Jennifer Simmons, Section 1 executive director, who made the announcement on Sunday. Lance McDowdell, a two-time Section 1 tournament MVP and Biondi’s star player, was ruled ineligible.

McDowdell’s home district is Mount Vernon and he was a first-team all-state lineman for Mount Vernon High School’s football team. He plays basketball at Biondi, however, and playing different sports at different schools is a violation of state rules.

Simmons told The Journal News that Section 1 was unaware of McDowdell’s activities at both schools.

McDowdell has been playing at the two schools for more than a year, yet Section 1 did not notice. He was an all-section lineman for Mount Vernon as a junior and earned tournament MVP honors when Biondi won the Class D championship last year.

Biondi will get to keep its 2011 title, as Simmons told The Journal News that she is “not going backward.”
