The annual book sale kicked off Saturday, Sept. 6, as dozens flocked to the library to peruse the thousands of books, DVDs and records that have been donated by residents to help benefit the library.

The opening weekend of the sale was an overwhelming success, with residents from around the area making their way to the library to pick up some classic titles on the cheap. According to volunteers from the Friends of the Scarsdale Public Library, the sale – which began on Saturday – came to an early fever pitch, with avid readers bombarding the library on opening day.

“We love this sale. Where else are you going to get books for pennies on the dollar,” shopper Penny McCready said on Sunday. “We’re encouraging our kids to read more, so we can just toss a box of books at them.”

The “regular” book sale began on Saturday, and will continue through Tuesday. The “half price sale” begins on Wednesday, Sept. 12 and will continue through Saturday with the “blow-out sale,” where books can be had for as cheap as a dime, being held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, marking the end of the book sale.

“We come every year, without question,” longtime Scarsdale resident Anna May said while perusing the non-fiction section. “It lets us give a little bit back to the community and gets us some good literature.”
