New Rochelle Book Club Going 15 Years Strong

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Former librarian Sue Mayley has been attending brown bag book discussions at the New Rochelle Public Library since November 1998 - just about as long as the library book club has been in existence.

“We talk about books we love,” said Mayley, following the groups meeting Wednesday with other regular participants such as New Rochelle residents Karen Allen and Joan Eskenazi.

The 10 to 15 person club meets every third week in the second floor library conference room from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is open to anyone free of charge. Library patrons can also borrow books discussed at the first floor information desk.

Wednesday’s selection was “Summertime” by J.M. Coetze. The group will discuss “The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway during its next meeting Feb. 15.

“Noah’s Compass” by Anne Tyler is on the agenda for Mar. 7, and James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces” is slated for Mar. 28.

Participants both new and old can bring their lunch and join in on the discussion led by librarian Kofi Addo-Nkum.

Elaine Mittelgluck comes to the discussions for good company.

“A book is a lonely thing, but when we do come together we discuss the books,” Mittelgluck said.

Book discussions often lead to opinionated conversations about world issues pertaining to the chosen text, such as religion.

Readers also spend time together outside of the talks to celebrate birthdays or go out to eat in the area.
