The family made headlines in August when Shivonie was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and faced considerable financial burdens. An article by The Dodo explains how Shivonie and her sons were on the verge of losing their home and beloved family dog. However, thanks to an outpouring of public support and the creation of a GoFundMe page by her son Ram , the family was able to raise over $25,000 dollars and find a new residence.

Shivonie is a single mom with two sons who currently attend Ardsley schools. The dinner hosted over 500 guests and raised $16,100 for the family. Varsity football coach Colin Maier plans to present a check to the Hoobraj family soon.

Additional donations to be sent to the family c/o Rob Wootten 17 Fuller Avenue, Ardsley, New York 10502.
