The whale, first spotted by fishermen around 1:30 p.m. Thursday between the New Rochelle shore and Execution Rocks Light, drew a number of spectators to the area, according to lohud.com, which reported the animal breached for air several times as it fed.

Later, the U.S. Coast Guard warned boaters to keep their distance from the whale, according to lohud.com, which reported experts anticipate better tracking of whales in the coming years as local sightings increase.

Though the Coast Guard had no further details on their warning Friday, a whale was spotted for the second day in a row as it headed east on the Shore toward Connecticut, according to lohud.com.
