Money Magazine has released its Top 100 list of places to live in the nation, and the number of municipalities in the Hudson Valley, and, in fact, New York, may come as a surprise.

That's because the number is zero.

To add insult to injury, a town called Pelham was selected 98th best. But it's located in Alabama, not Southern Westchester.

As if that's not enough for New Yorkers to swallow, New Jersey saw four towns make the Top 100, including the top-ranked municipality on the East Coast, the Bergen County borough of North Arlington, located 15 miles from New York City.

What gives? While the magazine doesn't say why some states -- including Connecticut -- were shut out, it seems clear that high real estate prices and high taxes may have prevented some southern New York venues from making the cut. But that doesn't explain upstate New York, which was also shut out from the Top 100.

Money said the rankings were based on "a healthy economy, affordable homes, and a high quality of life" and added a bit more background on the selections in an editor's note.
