Dr. Anthony Capone, 84, Irvington Obstetrician

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Dr. Anthony Joseph Capone of Irvington died May 22. He was 84.

Capone was a board certified surgeon and fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a resident of Irvington for more than 40 years.

The youngest of five children born to Dominic and Rose Capone, he was raised in Mount Vernon. Capone served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II and the Korean War. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and China Service Medal.

Capone graduated from Bucknell University and completed medical school at the University of Rochester. He was awarded Phi Beta Kappa for high scholarship and honors for excellence in biology from the Phi Sigma Biology Society.

He practiced at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers and Yonkers General Hospital, where he served as chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He had a private medical practice on Yonkers Avenue for more than 30 years.

Capone was an avid golfer and joke teller. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and touring the country in his motor home. His greatest love was family.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen (John) Lally and Lorri (Jim) Marshall; two sons, Dominic (Liza) Capone and Anton Capone; a brother, Louis Capone; two sisters, Ann Bloomberg and Carol Rufino; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Capone was predeceased by a brother, James Capone.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. Visiting will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service.
