Before Greenburgh's budget was voted on in December, the library received a 9 percent decrease in its funding to allow tax cap compliance. Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner now asks for residents' help on behalf of the library.
The Greenburgh Public Library serves our entire region. It's new, beautiful and big. One problem is that the town has cut the budget for the library because of the new tax cap and budget difficulties. These cuts impact the library's materials/book purchasing power.
In 2012, we are going to try to offset some of the cuts that have been made to the library's budget by waging an aggressive fundraising campaign. We are also seeking volunteers to help with programs, especially to help children with their homework. If you have the time and are interested in helping out, please advise. I am trying to help the library raise private dollars to offset budget cuts. If you have the time to help with fundraising initiatives, please advise also.
We need donations for books and materials. It costs about $25 per book purchasing and processing the book. I have suggested to the library board that they put a sticker on each book that is donated, acknowledging the donation.
All governments must think outside of the box. Other community libraries raise significant dollars from private donations. We can do the same.
The fundraising that I'm advocating is in addition to the fundraising efforts already organized by the Friends of the Greenburgh Library and the Greenburgh Library Foundation. They do some great things and sponsor terrific programs.
We need to think out of the box and raise private dollars and use volunteers. We have to comply with the new tax cap law that went into effect this past year.
