Greenburgh Gets First Look at Female Film Festival

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Greenburgh has been chosen to kick off this summer's Hadassah Film Festival.

On four consecutive Thursdays beginning July 12, the Greenburgh Public Library will host "Jewish Women Changing Their Worlds," a film series about women who were instrumental in expanding female roles in society.

"We're just lucky enough to have been the first ones who are able to run this festival," said Valerie Griffith, a Greenburgh librarian.

Hadassah's Westchester chapter will be screening four films at county's libraries throughout the summer and fall, but Greenburgh was approached to be first.

"We're very excited about it," Griffith said. "It's nice to be able to run a film series in the afternoon in the summer. It's a really nice choice of films." The films will be shown at 2 p.m. each Thursday.

First up, on July 12, is "Ahead of Time," highlighting the life of 100-year-old writer and journalist Ruth Gruber. It follows her story from her birth in 1911 to the Exodus in 1947.

The second film is "Yoo Hoo Mrs. Goldberg," which Hadassah described as a "humorous and eye-opening story of the actor, writer and broadcasting pioneer Gertrude Berg." It will be screened July 19.

"Grace Paley: Collected Shorts" is the third film, being shown July 26. It portrays the life of the Bronx-born writer, poet and political activist and features interviews with Paley and her friends, as well as recordings of her political undertakings and presentations of her written work.

The final film, "Making Trouble" on Aug. 2, chronicles the journey of six women – comics Joan Rivers and Gilda Radnor, playwright Wendy Wasserstein, actress Molly Picon and entertainers Sophie Tucker and Fanny Brice. The film is hosted by female comics Judy Gold, Jessica Kirson, Corey Kahaney and Jackie Hoffman.

Each movie will be followed by a discussion led by someone from the Westchester County chapter of Hadassah.

The Greenburgh Public Library is located at 300 Tarrytown Road. All films begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
