Irvington's Vitale Abate Dies at 73

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Vitale Abate, of Irvington, died March 14 at the age of 73.

He was born in Calitri, Italy to Vincenzo and Filomena Abate. In 1962, Abate immigrated to the United States. He settled in Dobbs Ferry, where he lived until moving to Irvington in 2005.

A talented cabinetmaker, Abate was a member of Carpenters Union Local 279. He had a great devotion to his daughters and granddaughters.

He is survived by his daughters Renata Abate Papovitch and Sandra Abate Choe and two granddaughters. Abate is also survived by his brother Vito Abate and his sister Rosa Cubelli. He was predeceased by his brother Gaetano and his parents. 

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. A funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by interment at Ferncliff Crematory in Hartsdale.
