Local Administrator Prepares Students for College

Saul Yanofsky is committed to helping students succeed, whether they are already enrolled at Westchester Community College or still in high school.

As the college's assistant dean for academic affairs, he oversees the Advanced College Experience (ACE) program to help high school juniors and seniors earn college credits by taking classes taught by certified teachers.

“Those credits can be transferred to any private school or State University of New York school," said Yanofsky, of White Plains. "Each year we usually get around 200 more kids that participate.”

At the end of the semester, each student receives a transcript from Westchester Community College. Yanofsky adds that each course, be it business, science, foreign language or calculus, must be listed in the course catalogue at Westchester Community College for the student to receive credit. High school teachers are tested by the college in the same way as adjunct professors.

Yanofsky says the idea behind the ACE program is to “smooth the transition between the high school and college experiences.”

Recently, Westchester Community College has started to test potential students with placement exams to gauge whether they are working at a collegiate level. If it is determined they are not, it is part of Yanofsky’s job to work with the high schools to sharpen those skills before graduation.

Yanofsky derives much of his administrative know-how from his time spent as Superintendent of Schools of the White Plains City School District from 1990 to 2002.  He continues to support the community as a board member for organizations like the Friends of White Plains Youth Bureau and the Community Housing Resource Center. Yanofsky is also affiliated with El Centro Hispano, a grassroots organization aimed at strengthening the Hispanic community.

“I’m still very much involved in a variety of work with the children and families of White Plains,” he said.
