Diane Eglauf of Mamaroneck captured a photo of one buck forging the channel at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

She lives in a building on the Sound.

"Evidently the deer haven’t been seen doing this in quite awhile," Eglauf told Daily Voice. "Although we did see two deer a few months back waiting to cross the channel one night when we were out on our boat."

"Unfortunately, I had to zoom the picture in order to see him and not the surroundings," she said of beautiful fall foliage and waterfront near the deer: "But there he was!!"

Eglauf explained that the buck Tuesday swam from the Rye side of the channel. "About two hours before that, the doe went across to the Rye side," she said.

Eglauf wondered if it was a "trial run for Santa."
