Sanders, Irvington Air Force Veteran, Dies at 76

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – John W. Sanders of Irvington died Jan. 19. at the age of 76.

The son of John W. Sanders, Sr. and Helen Putvah Sanders, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17. Sanders became a technical sergeant and was stationed at Reese Air Force Base in Texas. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service.

Upon his retirement, Sanders worked for MetLife Insurance Company in the sales department for 18 years. He demonstrated his love for planes by building intricate models of fighter planes. Sanders also built clocks, cabinets and other woodwork. He enjoyed traveling, embarking on many cruises and road trips.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Billie Jeanne Warnock-Sanders, his daughters Sherry Sanders and Pamela (Richard) Hatch, his son James A. (Elizabeth) Sanders, his sitters Martha (Leo) Villemaire and Mildred Widener, his brother Charles W. Sanders, 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law. He was predeceased by his brothers Miles and Wilson A. Sanders and his sister Jane E. Hart.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
