The “ground breaking” served as a ceremonial kick off for a renovation that will enhance and expand the library’s technology, create more comfortable seating, create more space for informal and formal learning, improve meeting and classroom space, create a new community room and add a café in the heart of the city, according to a statement from the library.
The new adult library is to be called The Hub.
"Through the creation of the The Trove children's library, The Edge teen space and now The Hub, as well as their innovative programming and offerings, the White Plains Public Library has proven that libraries are as relevant and important today as ever," said Mayor Thomas Roach in his remarks at the ceremony.
About 60 people attended the virtual groundbreaking on Sept. 7, including Roach, members of the White Plains Common Council, state Sen. George Latimer and state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman David Buchwald, and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin.
They were joined by library trustees, members of White Plains Library Foundation, individual library donors and community partners, according to the library’s statement.
The renovations will primarily take place on the library’s first floor, which will continue to provide circulation services and access to The Edge teen section and current adult fiction section, according to the library.
The most popular collections in the library — new books, DVDs, and music — and several librarian staff members will move to the auditorium on the second floor during the renovation.
