WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Ricardo Martinez and Janae Young of White Plains are among 15 Westchester high school students to receive the 2012 Jandon Scholarship.
Each year, the Jandon Foundation and the Westchester County Board of Legislators award $10,000 college scholarships to 15 students who have demonstrated academic achievement and service to their local communities, and financial need, according to a press release.
"We appreciate the opportunity to assist such remarkable young people in pursuing their college educations,” said Alec Cecil of the Jandon Foundation.
The scholarships are dispersed to the students in increments before each semester. Instead of receiving the $10,000 all at once, students must regularly submit their grades and class schedules before they receive checks. The amount they receive increases each year to encourage them to graduate on time.
E'Shondra McClendon, a 2007 graduate of Roosevelt High School and Jandon scholarship recipient, spoke to this year's awardees. She stood as an example of a student who used the scholarship to attend and graduate from college. She graduated from John Jay College in 2011 and will attend law school in September. In the meantime, she is working at Legal Service of the Lower Hudson Valley.
“It’s always gratifying to be able to recognize and honor a group of students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a high level of community involvement,” said Kenneth Jenkins, chairman of the Board of Legislators.
