Anti-Fracking Protest Planned For Outside Cuomo's Westchester Polling Place

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Protesters calling for a ban on fracking are scheduled to hold a rally early Tuesday morning, Sept. 9, in front of the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco, which is Gov. Andrew Cuomo's New Castle polling place.

The church is in New Castle near the border with Mount Kisco, off of Route 133. Cuomo's residential address, which has been listed with the state's Board of Elections, is along nearby Bittersweet Lane.

The protest is scheduled for 5:45 a.m., shortly before polls are scheduled to open for Primary Day. Cuomo faces a Democratic primary challenge from Fordham University law professor Zephyr Teachout.

“The science is in on fracking, and New Yorkers are seeing new evidence almost every day of the disastrous impacts fracking is leveling on public health and the environment in places where it’s happening,” Alex Beauchamp, a spokesman for a group called New Yorkers Against Fracking.

“We need and expect Governor Cuomo to protect New York’s communities by banning fracking, and we’ll be out reminding him of this until he does so.”

ProPublica describes fracking as "a process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States, where millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped underground to break apart the rock and release the gas."

The anti-fracking announcement voices concerns about impact to the air and water from the process, with links to various sites included as sources.
