ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- The Safe Routes to School sidewalk reconstruction project in Ardsley is set to begin Thursday.

Ardsley Village Manager George Calvi recently notified residents that the federally-funded project that will reconstruct sidewalks on the north side of Heatherdell Road between Farm Road and Olympic Lane on Thursday.

Landi Contracting of Hawthorne will perform the work, according to the notice from Calvi.

"During the work there will be ample space and proper grade for temporary pedestrian passage on the south side of Heatherdell between Windsong Road and McDowall Park," Calvi said in the notice. "However, the same cannot be said for the portion of the road between Windsong Road and Hilltop Avenue. The terrain is steep, and affords very little area for pedestrian passage or the placement of proper barriers to separate pedestrians from motorists. Having walked the area in question on that side of the road I can personally attest the experience can be hair-raising as SUVs and large trucks whiz by."

Calvi said Landi Contracting will not provide access during the two-and-a-half week construction project, according to the notice.

"This action will of course affect school children, commuters, joggers and those performing their daily walking exercises," Calvi said in the notice. "At the suggestion of our consultant, Don Marra, we reached out to Joe Urbanowicz at the Ardsley School District and he has agreed to accommodate us by temporarily providing school bus service for those students in the impacted area."

Work is expected to be contained within the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, Calvi noted, and residents should be prepared for some noise and dust, and that there will be periodic lane closures.

A series of letters, with more details, already mailed to residents of the adjacent properties, is available on the homepage of the Village's website .
