August 2010, Letter to my family and my friends who lost loved ones on 9-11:
I'm writing to tell you about the tale of the 9-11 memorial wall in the town of Greenburgh, Hartsdale, NY. The Westchester Arts Council along with the Hartsdale Rotary wanted to erect a memorial but had no place to put it. Greenburgh Town Supervisor, Paul Feiner, jumped at the opportunity to host the memorial as he saw this as on opportunity to get press, take credit, look like a good guy…… the residents wanted a memorial but were very concerned by his motivations. After much discussion regarding a proper place to erect the memorial, Paul Feiner decided that it should be placed in at Webb Field close to Central Park Avenue in Hartsdale. Everyone agreed that this was an inappropriate place.
The wall was erected in 2003 despite the public's concern for both the design and placement. It was an unsightly thing with the only redeeming qualities being 2000 tiles that children created that helped form so sort of a display. The Hartsdale Rotary painted some garish graffiti type thing on the reverse of the wall as they were determined to get their due credit as well. The press came, the politicians all arrived for photo ops, Paul Feiner took credit for it…… There was nothing surrounding the wall and it sat in a patch of dirt, on the edge of the field, on a busy street. The residents all agreed that it was unfitting tribute.
Finally, in 2007, after many years and numerous complaints, the town secured grant money to groom the memorial, place plantings and benches to make it more fitting. OK! It was better!
In the winter of 2008-09 the tiles started to fall from the wall. I called the town to alert them. They came and removed all 2000 tiles leaving a blank wall.
Paul Feiner will not take responsibility and repair/restore the wall despite fully knowing that it is the Towns responsibility to do so. To make a very long story short, the wall was erected in 2003 despite the public's concern for both the design and placement. The Hartsdale Rotary painted some garish graffiti type thing on the reverse of the wall as they were determined to get their due credit as well. In the winter of 2008-09 the tiles started to fall from the wall. I called the town to alert them. They came and removed all 2000 tiles leaving a blank wall. Per Paul Feiner, Town website 2003: "The Town of Greenburgh invited the Arts Council to place the 9/11 Memorial Mural at the Greenburgh park. The town was responsible for overseeing the construction of the wall and will assume maintenance responsibilities."
As of today the wall is still in disrepair with no word on when it will be restored. The anniversary in 2009, the memorial was blank. It appears it will be left blank again September 11, 2010. It is a complete eyesore and despite a barrage of complaints, nothing has been done. I pass it everyday, as it was erected in the gateway to my community, and everyday I’m ashamed and embarrassed.
As family members of those who perished I ask that you please email my Town Supervisor, Paul Feiner, (pfeiner@greenburghny.com)
and demand that the memorial be either restored or removed out of respect.
Unfortunately, the Town of Greenburgh has forgotten.
Peace,
Patty
When family contacted Paul, his response was " So, can you come to Westchester and fix it? It was was only though constant complaining and a request for a donation from Sam's Club (application before the town-new plaque affixed to wall) was the wall repaired using volunteers. Fixed badly.
It's also missing many original tiles. It looks awful. Rest assured, not one thin dime of tax payer money has been spent on maintain it despite Paul's commitment for the town to take responsibility for it.

@gc7mom: Are you his mother?
dear local dad
a good idea
however, the town (meaning paul feiner) agreed to a 99 year lease for the wall to remain in place
of course, any lease can be modified if both parties agree
no wonder the folks in unincorporate greenburgh are demanding to see the lease the town wants to enter into with the sports bubble people at the old frank's nursery site
one would hope that someday a candidate will arise to challenge mr feiner and his or her platform will include a promise to move this so called memorial wall to a more suitable location.
Can we agree to a compromise? How about moving the wall to a more suitable location? Not sure the logistics of this, and it might cost more than its worth, but you gotta admit, its kind of out of place where it is.
Can anyone provide an estimate of cost to move, or rebuild, and we can start there?
does paul or gc7 mom live anywhere near this wall? (paul, as we know lives in his gated community in boulder ridge).
what is to be proud about? how it was shoveled into this site without any neighborhood or community input? how it lacks any artistic merit? that the rotary (a private organization) was given public space ? and by the way, do you know that it was originally slated to be put near some coops in hartsdale and the owners went ballistic? instead this scar was inserted along the last stretch of open space along central avenue between yonkers and white plains. what an outrage that FEMA money was used in its construction.
this wall is the antithesis of democracy and is an unsuitable memorial.
it should be torn down.
Seriously folks?! Using a 9/11 wall to attack Paul Feiner? 9/11 was a sacred day, many of us were affected beyond words.
I like the 911 memorial wall. I have taken my kids there and visited the wall and talked about what 9/11 means to each of the kids that made the individual tiles. I have talked to my kids about what 9/11 means to me.
I am proud that Hartsdale has a 9/11 memorial and that it doesn't take 10+ yrs to get started (look at NYC).
I am proud of the 911 wall. The Westchester Arts Council initiated this project shortly after 9-11. About 1800 tiles were displayed. Westchester residents have attended workshops expressing what 9/ll meant to them on 6 by 6 colorful tiles. Images range from the patriotic, such as people saluting flags, to the pastoral, including scenes of grassy fields and other lovely places far removed from the destruction of that day. Last year the town rehabilitated the wall and many residents (who appreciate the significance of the wall) volunteered their time - working with our arts & culture committee. The NY Port Authority donated an artifact from the World Trade Center which has been affixed to the wall.
I understand that no project - no initiative the town takes - will ever have unanimous support. But, I believe that more and more people appreciate the value of having this wall in our community. And - since the wall was restored last year - I have noticed many people looking at the murals and reflecting on the tragedy that occured on 9-11.
this wall of nothingness should be torn down
the county had a world class competition for a 9/11 memorial and the result was the outstanding "rising" near the dam
greenburgh got a press release version of a memorial
and paul gave more public space away to the rotary for their self congratulary mural on the other side of this farce
PS I speak for families in Hartsdale, who reside in Collage Corners where the wall is place, who lost family members on 9-11.
I know exactly where this is and I an ashamed to live in a town that takes credit for it's existence. Paul: Since you LOVE the internet, you of all people can appreciate that, for century's to come, there will be a record, online, for those who you offended with this sham of a memorial. You are dispicable. It will go down in history, online, despite your lasting tenure as supervisor. ONLINE FOREVER. USED 911 victims for political gain=Paul Feiner
That was quick. claudiavonsyr takes Week 1.
It's just one of Feiners other debacles at the former Webb Field on the Central Avenue parking lot.
Joke of a mural
More like 9/11 eyesore
A ponderous mess
Outrageously feiner used FEMA funds to build it
And gave the other side if this ugly wall to the rotary for its joke of acmural
Feiner is search of a press release ruined a lovely open space vista on central avenue
911 memorial wall on central avenue.
