Cooke broke into Bonistall's apartment near the University of Delaware, where she was attending school in 2005. He then bound, raped and strangled the victim, the Delaware News Journal reported.

Cooke was previously convicted and sentenced to death in 2007, but had that conviction thrown away by a divided state Supreme Court ruling. The courts upheld the ruling of his second trial in 2012, the Delaware News Journal said.
