Mayor Hartley Connett offciated the dual celebration with nearly 300 residents and visitors gathered at the Ashford Ave. church cemetery that dates back to 1828 and where several Revolutionary and Civil War veterans buried.
"We have so many people and groups to thank for all the work they have done to restore this historic cemetery," Connett said. "Young and old, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Village workers and donors gave contributed. But most of all, we want to honor or veterans and thank them for their service."
Connett noted the work of Village Adminstrator Marcus Serrano, Recreation Supervisor Matt Arone and Gary Gardner, the head of the Dobbs Ferry Department of Public Works for their work on the restoration of the cemetery.
Mary Donovan, the President of the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society gave a brief history of the cemetery and has aided in restoring grave stones and records.
Altaira Calen, a Dobbs Ferry Girl Scout, presented a commemorative brochure with the history of the cemetery.
"I wanted to do research and get as much background on those who are buried here," Calen said. "It was very interesting and I hope I contributed something that people can learn from."
