ELMSFORD, N.Y. - Members of the Elmsford Volunteer Fire Department welcomed visitors and potential volunteers Saturday as the department participated in the 3rd Annual RecruitNY statewide recruitment initiative.
The open house was held at Elmsford Fire Company No. 1 on East Main Street with a second event scheduled for Sunday at the Live Oak Engine Company on North Lawn Ave.
"This is a good opportunity for people to come by and learn what the volunteer fire department is all about," Elmsford Fire Chief Peter DeLuca said. "I've been with the department for 25 years and I'd like to see a new young group of volunteers. We hope our recruitment day will inspire more of our residents to join our fire service family.”
RecruitNY highlights the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter and raises public awareness about the need for volunteers. More than 70 percent of fire departments across the nation are volunteer.
The Elmsford firefighters conducted a tour of the fire station and firefighter apparatus, allowed visitors to try on firefighter gear, and provided activities and stations throughout the firehouse for visitors.
Volunteer firefighters or emergency medical technicians must be at least 18 years old. The Elmsford Fire Department akso has an Explorer Post/Venturing Crew for youngsters ages 14-21.
Sunday's open house at Live Oak Engine Company begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. For more information about becoming a firefighter or junior firefighter, contact Chief DeLuca at 914-592-6555 or visit the Elmsford Fire Department website or Facebook page.
