Elmsford Flooded, Babbitt Court Under Water Again

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – No stranger to the flood waters over the decades, the low lying Elmsford neighborhood at Babbitt Court was hit hard Sunday when rain from Hurricane Irene forced the Saw Mill River over its banks forcing evacuations, leaving the Garcia family with a flooded basement.

“Usually on a normal rain this happens,” said Jennifer Garcia, a resident of Babbitt Lane. “But the water doesn’t come to our house – usually it goes to the lower houses, but this time it’s really bad.”

Members of the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department helped residents reach higher ground. Residents used a small raft to go from home to home helping neighbors. Garcia’s home, three houses in from the high ground on Route 9A, which intersects Babbitt Lane, had four feet of water in its basement.

“Everyone has to take photos for the insurance companies,” Garcia said. “The people down the end of the block have it very bad. It hasn’t reached out house for 10 years. It just kept raining and kept getting worse.”

Less than a mile south of Babbitt Court on Route 9A, a large tree fell across the two-lane road, taking down wires. Town workers and police cordoned off the area with yellow police line tape, prohibiting traffic in both directions.

One mile north, where 9A meets Route 119 in Elmsford, police closed off a flooded area that runs under the Saw Mill River Parkway. Further north, Route 9A was closed to traffic in both directions below the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) due to flooding.
