Elmsford Students Try Zumba for Fitnesss

ELMSFORD, N.Y. — From the top of the stage on Alexander E. Grady’s gym, physical education teacher Drew Watson held a portable microphone and told the 300-plus students gathered there what Zumba is about.

“It’s all about the arms and it’s all about the hips,” he said.

Soon Latin songs like “Macarena” were blasting on the speakers and the kids started shaking and jumping, following Watson steps.

“Left, right, left, ho,” he shouted.

Zumba, a Latin-inspired fitness class, was the main activity in the seventh version of the school’s annual Fitness Friday, which took all the school’s students to the gym last week. Some of them, like fourth grader Steve D’Avella, had their hair and face painted with red, black and white, the Elmsford district’s colors, and the letter “Raiders,” the name of Alexander Hamilton School’s team.

At a certain point, Watson asked D’Avella to stand up, so that the other kids could see him.

“When we talk about school spirit, that’s school spirit right there,” Watson said.

Steve said that he decided to paint himself after he saw a friend from another school doing the same.

“My sister did the ‘Raiders’ and I did the rest,” he said.

He also said that he enjoyed the Fitness Friday.

“It’s good for your bones and I keep myself in shape,” he said.
