Elmsford Sweet-Tooths Enjoy National Doughnut Day

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – If you’re looking for a quick sugar fix in Elmsford, you’re in luck.

Friday is National Doughnut Day, a holiday started 75 years ago by the Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Doughnut stores around the area celebrated the occasion with free doughnut giveaways. In Elmsford, doughnut lovers shuffled into Main Street’s Dunkin' Donuts throughout the day, grabbing a free doughnut with the purchase of a drink.

“It has been crazy today,” one worker said.

National Doughnut Day commemorates "doughnut lassies," the 250 female Salvation Army volunteers who provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and home-cooked meals, and naturally, doughnuts, for soldiers in France during World War I, according to the Salvation Army.

The creative cooks were even forced to fry the doughnuts in soldier’s helmets, the group says.
