ELMSFORD, N.Y. There's no better mixture than food and fundraising for an Elmsford-based organization except for maybe Greg Malara's Wisconsin Trio Cheese fondue.
The Melting Pot, 30 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains, is teaming up with Westhab, a local nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and homeless shelters, during October to raise money for Westhab. Malara, one of the restaurant's managers, said The Melting Pot contacted Westhab with the idea for what they are calling the Fondue-Raiser.
"We're able to give back to the community, and it's for a good cause," he said. "It's great if we're able to make a difference in the community."
By visiting The Melting Pot's or Westhab's websites and printing out a voucher, customers can go to the restaurant any day during October and 10 percent of their bill will go to benefit Westhab's facilities and residents.
Westhab has two homeless shelters, seven after-school buildings and 27 other buildings that offer affordable housing throughout Westchester County and New York City. Program developer John Parssinen said he was grateful to be contacted by The Melting Pot, because although Westhab holds several other fundraising projects throughout the year, the funds deplete quickly.
"Raising funds is critical to ensure our organization's sustainability," Parssinen said. "Plus you get to eat delicious food."
The Melting Pot offers a unique setting. With stove burners built into the tables, restaurant staff members mix the cheese or chocolate blends directly in front of customers. During the main course, customers actually get to cook their own food, putting their choice of meat broil in the pot.
Two special events will also take place during the month: The Dinner Affair on Oct. 19, in which diners can enjoy a raffle and a special dinner package, $10 of which will go to Westhab, and a Bar Event on Oct. 26, in which part of customers' bar tabs will go to the nonprofit.
Westhab manages 1,000 units of affordable housing, and community events like these allow its operation, Parssinen said.
"We rely on a number of events, and we need all the help we can get," he said.
