Free Eyeglasses for Veterans in Hartsdale

Central Eyes Optical in Hartsdale is giving back this Memorial Day, offering free prescription glasses to veterans and their families.

From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., owner Terry Scheider will give away free reading and distance glasses to American soldiers and their families. Friends in the business donated various frames and lenses to contribute to this patriotic cause.

"I woke up one morning with an inspiration to give back," said Scheider. "It's my little way of saying thanks. I'm glad to do something to help."

Scheider is expecting nearly 1,000 people with military connections to enter his store during the free hour."There have been wives who have lost their husbands calling me saying they never met a person that did something like this their entire life," he said. "You get a little choked up by it that you're doing a good thing."

While most companies do not give their products away for free, Scheider is glad to serve his community and assist the people who have volunteered their lives to benefit Americans at home and across the globe.

"I'm literally not doing this for anything other than helping those who have helped us survive," said Scheider. "I'm patriotic. And as you get older, you learn to appreciate more."

Scheider works 10-hour days, seven days a week. He opened his business in 2001 and is now looking to become the only eyeglasses frame manufacturer in America.

Central Eyes Optical is located at 161 South Central Park Ave. in Hartsdale. Parking is available.
