HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Stan Avedon is the general manager at Hastings Velo on Main Street, but he also is the leader of group bike rides across Westchester each weekend. Having been open for just three months, Avedon uses the bike rides as a way to connect with local biking enthusiasts.
"[My favorite part] is the social aspect of it and putting people together," Avedon said.
While some rides are shorter than others, the Sunday route goes up to Sleepy Hollow and back totaling 25 miles. The rides are split up into two groups with Avedon leading the faster group and another rider leading the second squad. On Sundays the group meets at 7:30 a.m. before embarking on their ride at 8 a.m. sharp. The group plans to start meeting at Antoinette's on Warburton Ave. where riders can grab a little caffeine before the workout.
"We all leave here together and we ride as a group practicing safe riding techniques and rules of the road," Avedon said.
Although it sounds like quite the journey, Avedon played it down, saying the ride is over in less than two hours. Those looking for a different type of challenge can meet at the bike shop on Saturday mornings for a ride in Sprain Ridge Park, which Avedon states is "for the mountain bike crowd."
Although a shorter overall distance, 1.5 miles, the ride is another way to work out for those looking to hop on their bikes.
Avedon has been riding for over 35 years, but said it doesn't take an expert to get ready for these rides. It just takes an interest and a commitment and he'll take care of the rest.
"We do, it's called bicycle fitting," he said. "I have a fitting studio here where we take your geometry, your physical coordinates and address them to a bicycle to effectuate the most optimum riding position for ease as well as increasing your power and response and making it safer on the bike."
