Greenburgh and Elmsford Gear up For Memorial Day

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Parade organizers around Westchester and the nation are gearing up for a day of remembrance with Monday’s Memorial Day celebration.

In Greenburgh and Elmsford, three separate parades will hit the streets, honoring those who have lost their lives in the battle for freedom. Marchers and organizers of the parades called it “a day of deep reflection and remembrance with our loving community.”

“Memorial Day is all about remembering the troops and what they did to gain our freedom and the sacrifices they made,” said Hartsdale Fire Chief Ed Rush.

Rush and the Hartsdale department will begin its annual Memorial Day tribute with a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Hartsdale Train Station, followed by a parade.

The department will join with the Greenville Fire Department, as well as area Scout and youth groups marching to music from the New York Ancients Marching Band. Paradegoers can watch the group make its way up East Hartsdale Avenue to the Four Corners, continuing south on Central Avenue to Hartsdale Fire Station #1.

At 11 a.m., the Fairview Fire Department will march in a parade of its own that will begin at the department's headquarters and proceed down Tarrytown Road to a memorial at Greenburgh Police Station. There will be a small ceremony at the memorial before returning to the Fairview Fire Department for a closing ceremony.

In Elmsford, the village's 82nd annual parade will begin at Legion Park on Main Street at 10:30 a.m., followed by a gathering next to Village Hall in Belway Electric's parking lot.

Forecasters are calling for temperatures in the low 80s with partly cloudy skies. It’s important, Rush said, not to let the message of Memorial Day get lost in the celebration of summer or hot dogs and grilling.

“We need to make sure we never forget why we have this holiday and all the sacrifices that went ahead of us to get us where we are today - the greatest county in the world,” he said.
