Tucked away behind Greenburgh's Route 119 lies Donna Chambers Designs, a jewelry making company that has long offered atypical, one-of-a-kind pieces to retail stores.
"I always refer to my jewelry as a marriage of history and style," said owner Donna Chambers. "I take the historic piece and I put it into a contemporary setting. And I try to make each piece something that will be cherished for quite a while."
Chambers opened her company in 1979. All of the jewelry is made on-site at her Greenburgh storeroom, where she moved to in July 2006.
"The one-of-a-kind factor and the history make it a really big deal," she said.
Her jewelry currently employs gaming chips that were used by the British from 1720 to 1840. Included with each piece is a card inscribed with the history of the gaming chip to alert the buyer of the material's antiquity and value.
"I sell my line of jewelry to stores across the country," said Chambers. "And that's how I've made my living all these years. I've sold to almost everybody, including Macys, Bloomingdales, Saks, and older stores that have gone under."
Chambers became interested in jewelry as a Pratt University graduate, where she concentrated on fashion, art and design.
Donna Chambers Designs is located on Prospect Avenue in Greenburgh, which she likes because of the privacy and peacefulness.
Born and raised in Ossining, Chambers moved to Elmsford with her family at a young age in 1967. She then moved to Brooklyn for 18 years before returning to Greenburgh in the mid-1980s. She has one daughter who is a former WNBA player.
