Greenburgh Community Center Repairs In The Works

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Work to repair the gym and make improvements at Greenburgh's Theodore D. Young Community Center should begin by the end of the year, according to Public Works Commissioner Victor Carosi.

James Robinson, Deputy Commissioner of the center, said the repairs to damage caused last year by Hurricane Irene are long overdue. He said the hurricane heavily damaged the gym, turning the floor into a " skateboard park ."

"The repairs are absolutely necessary — we have no gymnasium. We've had to go to other facilities for our programs like karate and basketball," Robinson said. "When we get the floor back we can bring the community back to the community center."

Other repairs will be made as well, including replacing the ventilation system at the  indoor pool and the heating and air conditioning system for the gym.

In the past, the gym's heating and air conditioning system functioned poorly and was susceptible to cause water to leak on the wood floor. New units will be installed outside the roof instead of hanging inside from the ceiling, which will "provide much better temperature control to the gym and, as they are no longer in the gym, the amount of noise from the fans will no longer be a problem during events," Carosi said.

The town has secured a $169,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install a solar hot water heating system for the pool. The remaining projects are estimated to cost $500,000, Carosi said, which was appropriated through a past capital funding project.

To avoid future water damage to the new floor, the town has applied for funding from FEMA for a flood-proofing project that could involve flood gates, Carosi said.

The town is in the process of choosing a contractor for the project, Carosi said, and expects to have one picked by the end of October.
