Greenburgh Gas Station Mixes Diesel and Flowers

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Oil and its derivates are usually associated with pollution. Look at a gas station, and you may remember environmental disasters such as the recent Gulf of Mexico spill.

But that's not the case at the gas station that sits at the corner of Hillside Avenue and Tarrytown Road.

There, colorful flowers are spread all around its entrance, including the spot beneath a board that reads "Diesel."

"It's very contrasting," said Marisol Vilches, of Sleepy Hollow, standing at the bus stop in front of the gas station.

Vilches was waiting for the 40 bus to take her to the Westchester Community College, where she is doing an English course.

"They are beautiful," she said of the flowers.

Leonardo Tenezaca, the 17-year gas station employee who takes care of the flowers, said that "the boss" told him to plant them because he wanted "to make the place prettier."

"It's better for the customers," Tenezaca said in Spanish.
