Greenburgh Library Seeks Photo Contest Submissions

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - The clock is ticking for Westchester’s top photographers to catch their best shots. The Greenburgh Public Library Foundation began accepting photographs for its third annual Westchester Amateur Photo Contest on Thursday, giving area shutterbugs a chance to cash in on their hobby.

The foundation will continue to accept photographs until the end of the March.

Open only to residents of Westchester County, the program was created three years ago by Howard Jacobs, former president of the Greenburgh Library Board of Trustees. And the program has been a big hit, Foundation Trustee Cory Deitchman said, as the group has received considerably more photos than it expected in each of the past two years.

“We have been quite pleased with it,” Deitchman said. “We have seen some really good photos and excellent exhibits and we are expecting that again this year.”

Just days since opening this year's competition, the library is already seeing photos flow in, he said.

Next month, a panel of judges will select the work of 60 adults and 20 students whose work displayed in the Greenburgh Library’s Howard and Ruth Jacobs Family Gallery from May 2 to June 14.

But a handful of winners will earn more than just a chance to show off their work. One adult will be awarded the top prize of $500 during a reception at the library in May. A runner-up will take home $200 and $100 will be awarded to a pair of third place winners.

In the high school category, one winner will be awarded $150. Second place will rake in $100, while third place will be given $50.

The contest is only open to amateur photographers who are residents of Westchester County. Photographs must be submitted digitally between March 15 and March 31. The library requests they be sent as jpeg attachments to photocontest@greenburghlibrary.org.
