Greenburgh's Theodore D. Young Community Center is hosting a driving workshop for older drivers to help keep roads safe.
The AARP will offer older drivers an opportunity to review their driving knowledge while learning how to drive defensively during a class beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
"These classes are important to encourage safety," said George Coniglio of the community centers senior citizen program. "It's to revise basic skills and learn updates on new laws and regulations. It makes people really conscious of the techniques. You'd be surprised what people forget. The main goal is to keep people safe."
Attendees will be briefed on the changes of road law, as well as ways to counteract eyesight, skeletal and dexterity issues caused by age. This knowledge is likely to lessen accidents or chance of injury on the road.
"The class takes into account some real world hypothetical situations," said Coniglio. "What do you do with road rage? What's the best way to react? How many car lengths should you be from the car in front of you if you're going 50 miles per hour? It also takes into account diminished reflexes. If you're an older driver, you'll have a little less reaction time to press the brakes."
Upon completion, drivers will receive a three-year insurance reduction and a one-point decrease on their license.
The workshop is taught by instructor Samir Eskander and priced at $14 or $12 for AARP members. The Theodore D. Young Community Center is located at 32 Manhattan Ave. in Greenburgh.
