Greenburgh Police Receive Donation for Rescue Team

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – The Greenburgh Police Department is set to receive new self-contained breathing apparatuses for their technical rescue team.

Thanks to a grant by the Metropolis Country Club Foundation, the department will soon be able to double their quantity of breathing apparatuses from four to eight, which are expected to be purchased before the end of the month.

"That was a very generous donation," said Police Chief Joseph DeCarlo. "It's very appreciated by the department."

As the town has its own water department, the technical rescue team is underground more often than other police agencies would be, said DeCarlo. The team, led by Sergeant Anthony McVeigh, has to comply with state law that mandates the ability to rescue anyone who gets trapped underground. The technical rescue team will use the devices when they go into confined spaces.

"They're very important with this new technology," said DeCarlo. "It's like a scuba device but it has more safety features. It is important because it's new technology."

Formed in 1997, the technical rescue team is a police department response team for dangerous or hazardous missions. It also contains members who are paramedics and firefighters from the Greenville and Fairview fire departments. McVeigh trains the members, who are obligated to keep their skills up-to-date with recurrent practice.
