Greenburgh to Interview Attorneys for NextG Plans

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – The Greenburgh Town Board will be interviewing several attorneys with expertise in the telecommunications field early next week as it continues to weigh the application of an infrastructure provider to place 20 cell antennas in the town.

The board is leaning toward hiring special counsel as it gets close to making a decision on the plans submitted two years ago from NextG Networks. NextG representatives have said their primary customer for the controversial project is MetroPCS, which currently provides service in White Plains, New Rochelle and Rye from NextG equipment.

The antennas in Greenburgh are designed to fill coverage gaps in areas from the Central Avenue Business District to the Sprain Brook Parkway and a portion of the Saw Mill River Parkway and New York Thruway.

Supervisor Paul Feiner said he would prefer the interviews the board has with attorneys on Monday and Tuesday be held in full view of the public.

"With antennas people don't have a lot of trust in government with the process," Feiner said. "We all want to do the right thing for the town. If people understand the issues, when we make a decision people will understand the reasons."

However, Town Attorney Tim Lewis said the attorneys being invited, all of whom were recommended by local residents, had asked that the interviews with the board take place behind closed doors.

"Maybe we can have an open session on the issues and basic laws and then go into our basic issues in executive session," Lewis said.

Monday night's work session at town hall begins at 7 p.m. and Tuesday morning's work session is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
